I saw this guy perform on Jools Holland last night. It's so nice to discover somebody making it in the music world who is actually good. He has restored this old cynics faith in the future of music. We'll see how long that lasts..

My favourite of his tunes, 'Tell Me A Tale', was released on limited 10" vinyl back in June. It sold out & of course can now be found on discogs alongside a silly price-tag.

You can get his second release easily though.

So, go forth & support this great new artist. Buy his music & go to his shows. The future of music depends on it.

Truth be told I've never been that big a Gil Scott-Heron fan, though I probably just need to dig a little deeper. Anway, I picked up this test press copy of his 1982 LP 'Moving Target' from the goldmine Olan recently brought back from the Shtates. Picked up some real nice electro bits & pieces too. Twas a sight to behold, let me tell you.

The wonderful Peaking Lights have put together a couple of damn fine mixes for the Gorilla vs Bear guys. The latest one has reached it's download limit on soundcloud, so I went to the trouble of ripping it —it's that good— so now it's available to all. Woo. I used this handy little program, which is a nifty oul hoore for grabbing the feisty ones.

This is simply a phenomenal tune. An all-time favourite at this stage. Big ups to mister Mark Allton for putting me onto it a couple of years ago. There are some utterly pointless edits of this around, ignore them, this is the one you need. It builds so nicely, why anyone would think it needs an edit is a mystery to me.

The a-side on this record is the very well known [and rightfully so, it's amazing] disco track 'Everybody Needs Somebody Sometimes' [which was pointlessly re-edited by a certain well known DJ], but the B-Side has it's moments too, in between what I consider to be some pretty questionable vocals. So I looped up all the good bits & gave it a short back & sides. Originally this was meant to be a kind of secret weapon, last song of the night edit for me, but for some reason I've never played it out, and banged it up about 3 years ago. So here it is.

I picked up this LP after hearing Edmx spinning it on his always excellent podcast series. J.J. Fad were a Dr. Dre produced female pop trio active in the late '80s. In this number, they rap over a Dre'd up version of Juan Atkin's classic 'Night Drive / Time, Space, Transmat'.

Radiomade have recently launched a brand new website. They kindly asked me to submit a podcast for it, so the same night I was asked (to avoid obsessing over the tracklist), I fired up the ole ones & twos, put on a 45 & started recording. I decided to only play 45s for the entire thing, as so many of my little fellas rarely see the light of day, I thought it'd be nice to give them some attention for once. I didn't plan anything past the first track, so it's a little rough around the edges, not all of it is beat-mixed, and there are a couple of skips. It's pretty eclectic, it contains soul, rnb, reggae, new beat, italo, disco, jazz funk, house, a 45 played at 33rpm (on purpose) & moarrr.

South Side Coalition - Get Off Your Seats And Jam

I picked up this compilation LP a few years ago from a stall in London Town. It has many excellent songs on it, my favourite of which is 'Get Off Your Seats And Jam' by 'South Side Coalition'. It's only drawback being its shortness (that's what she said - hweh?), I was pretty excited when I discovered the original 7" had a version that clocked in at over 6 minutes. Although a 12" version would be more ideal, 6 minutes is still 6 minutes whatever the format. And I wanted it for my ears.

I was even more excited to see a copy on discogs for €5. BAM & it was bought. So it arrived & I opened it feverishly to discover two pieces of vinyl in the mailer. A big bit & a small bit, as you can see above. The seller hadn't written fragile on it & the postman had shoved it through my ill-fitting letter box.

Ah well. I suppose I'll do a quick edit of the version I do have someday. For the time being, please enjoy the short version, and play it loud.

Laid Back - Make It Beautiful

Laid Back are of course most well known for their italo classic 'White Horse' which came out in 1983. I picked up their 'It's a Shame' 12" (as seen above) recently for next to nothing. The a-side is pretty dire, but the b2 is this nice, new-wavey late '80s number.

It didn't really grab me at first, but on repeated listens I've grown quite fond of it indeed. There's something magic about the melancholic groove throughout combined with the vacuous "make it beautiful" vocal, all on top of a stompy beat & catchy guitar hook. It's even got a pompous guitar solo near the end, and the line "no coke, I'm laid back".

The production on it is really nice too, some nice bits of delay, reverb etc in certain sections, most notably on the drums & vocals.

It's cheap as chips on discogs if want to pick it up on wax.

This has become one of my favourite tunes of all time. I didn't quite appreciate it the first time I heard it years ago, but boy has it grown on me. Anyone who has caught me DJ-ing in the past few months is likely to have heard me playing this. At the right time, this will take the buzz from warm to red hot shmokin' baby!

Manzel is known and loved by the hip hop heads & funkateers alike for his equally scorching, more downtempo tune 'Midnight Theme'. Originals of any of these will set you back a fair dollar, bai.

I picked up this downtempo italo tune for a euro in a charity shop recently. The main melody is based on Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield. The female vocals are both exquisite & headwrecking, throughout the 7 & a half minutes. This is the kind of tune that people like Glass Candy and others have been trying to emulate (and sometimes successfully too!) over the last few years.

The North Strand Kontra Band have been playing their own unique blend of balkan / klezmir music around Ireland & abroad for the last five years. If you're into live music in Dublin you're sure to have seen or at least heard about the lads at some stage. They're a 7 piece instrumental band who play an upbeat mix of original and traditional material influenced predominantly by the music of Romania and Bulgaria, all the while incorporating elements of funk & drum & bass to make things a little more interesting, & lively!

I picked up the Chromeo 12" x 2 DJ Kicks comp back in December for 10 euros in Tower. I'd wanted it mainly for this stone cold killer by Carmen, but was chuffed to find plenty of other great stuff on it too. Some serious bassline action in this 1985 hit by Val Young.

Val started out as a background singer in the '70s for people like George Clinton, Roy Ayers & The Gap Band, before being picked up by Rick James who produced her debut LP in 1985; Seduction. There were a few other dacent number on it, most notably..

The first mix is also a little ropey cos the needles were skipping. Think I just about saved it though.
